About

Chosewood Park

Chosewood Park, nestled in the heart of southeast Atlanta, Georgia, is not just a neighborhood but a testament to the power of community-driven transformation. This historic area, bordered by Peoplestown, Grant Park, Boulevard Heights, Benteen Park, Thomasville Heights, South Atlanta, and Lakewood Heights, has undergone a remarkable journey, thanks to the unwavering efforts of Friends of Chosewood Park.

Historical Roots and Evolution

Originally established as workforce housing for the United States Penitentiary in 1902, Chosewood Park's landscape was further shaped by the employees of the General Motors Lakewood Assembly plant between 1927 and 1990. In the late 2000s, the neighborhood faced economic challenges as development projects stalled due to the U.S. housing bubble and subsequent foreclosures.

By 2008, a staggering 24% of homes sat vacant, with properties selling for less than $9,000. However, Chosewood Park's resilience became evident as it rebounded from adversity. The Atlanta Housing Authority's plan led to the demolition of Englewood Manor in 2009, marking a turning point for the neighborhood.formation.

Blooming Chosewood

The revitalization gained momentum with the implementation of the Atlanta BeltLine project in 2011, transforming blighted industrial land into five acres of vibrant greenspace. By the end of 2012, over 60% of dilapidated or vacant houses had been renovated, setting the stage for a remarkable transformation.

Edible Neighborhood: Cultivating Community Bonds

Chosewood Park is the pilot site for Edible Neighborhood, a visionary program launched in February 2013. Fruit and nut trees lined the sidewalks, followed by edible flowers and herbs, creating a tapestry of community gardens accessible to all. In February 2017, another round of planting brought apple, plum, pear, persimmon, and fig trees to the neighborhood, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the environment.
